Running Through History

Experience the pivotal winter encampment site of Washington’s troops in a whole new way. Run a challenging five-mile course through scenic Valley Forge National Historical Park past replica soldiers’ huts and the National Memorial Arch during the annual Valley Forge Revolutionary 5-mile Run, set for Sunday April 22.

The race, sponsored and produced by the Valley Forge Convention and Visitors Bureau, is sanctioned by Mid-Atlantic USA Track and Field. The event encompasses the 5-mile run, stepping off at 8:30 a.m., a 3-mile walk, beginning at 8:35 a.m., a Young Patriots 1.776-kilometer Fun Run, at 8:45 a.m., and a post-run family expo promoting health and fitness.

As a kickoff to National Park Week, the run continues to benefit the park’s recreation preservation initiatives. In its six-year history, it has raised more than $119,000 for the cause.

Other highlights include the presentation of the “Spirit of Valley Forge – Triumph over Adversity award, which recognizes a race participant for whom the event represents personal triumph over a significant challenge, like the Continental soldiers who struggled and survived the Valley Forge winter encampment of 1777-78. Participants also donate used running shoes for recycling through the Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe Program, which are ground into raw material for sport and playground surfaces.
