The history of African Americans is woven into the fabric of our nation's history at every turn, from its earliest days. The names and events are familiar, but the locations are elusive. Historic preservation favors the homes of the wealthy, not that of their servants or those they enslaved. Equally challenging is the trail of the Underground Railroad, which of necessity was kept secret. So in retracing the footsteps of African-Americans, we have to dig a little deeper, to seek them out, and to remember.
